Darker than any kolsch I have previously seen. Murky, brown color and served with one finger of head that held on well. A lot of lacing is left down the glass.
Smells like a dunkel lager because of the dark malt used. Notes of caramel, bread, and earthy hops.
Tastes of the darker malt in the beer. Quite bready with caramel flavor. Not getting much taste influence from the yeast or the hops. It does have a mild bitterness in the finish. Somewhat dry but not as dry as most other kolschs.
Medium body with really nice carbonation.
I wonder if there are kolschs like this in Germany. Definitely not something I have run across before.
