Pours a murky amber brown with a bit of residual bubbling whenever agitated. Clocking in at 120 IBUs, this is an American barleywine that doesn't mess around; it's also the only barleywine I'm aware of with motueka hops, which add a great, juicy aroma of tropical fruits along with some grassy bitterness. The only downside is some noticeable heat from the high alcohol content. The hops subside a bit on the tongue, where caramel and a strong malt backbone emerge.
For a young, small-batch brewer, this punches way above its weight class. It's exceptional and has a great, full-bodied mouthfeel. I wager that it would fare well in a blind tasting against more well-known hoppy barleywines from the region, like 3 Floyds' Behemoth or some of Pipeworks' Unicorns.
