A stout brewed using Invader coffee
Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color with a small head of tan colored foam. The head fades rather fast, leaving a light level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is heavy of a coffee aroma mixed with tons of roasted malt. Some sweet aromas of caramel and toffee smell are mixed with a bit of brown sugar. Along with these smells comes some vanilla cake aromas as well as notes of chocolate and crème.
Taste – The taste starts out dark and roasty, with a big showing of coffee and a bit molasses and brown sugar. The brown sugar and molasses remain very light throughout with the dark and roasty tastes being the major contributors to the tastes profile. Bits of chocolate and vanilla mix in as the taste advances, adding a touch more flavor. At the same time a very light crème taste that is upfront fades, and with it, the taste becomes more bitter. Char and some smoke come in at the backside, and with the other flavors, leave one with a rather dark and somewhat bitter coffee and roast taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is rather thick with a carbonation level that is lower. For the style very dark nature the feel is nice and makes for a nice rich sipper.
Overall – Not really what I expected. I was expecting a very sweet, pastry stout like beer. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of the roastiness and bitter coffee in the taste. I don’t get a lot of tiramisu in this one, but a very nice brew none the less.
