The colour is dark wine red with a tint of brown. The liquid is clear. The two finger head sinks slowly, leaving some lacing and a fine pale brown ring.
The mild smell is very dry and hoppy with a hint of alcohol. There are notes of plum and Madeira.
The taste is complex and fruity. It is milder than I had expected. Lots of dried fruits, hints of coffee and roasted nuts, plums, matured strong wine, hints of spices like cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. There are some fresh neutral bitter notes. The aftertaste brings some mild bitterness, cream, roasted nuts and a touch of butter beans. There are no traces of the 9% alcohol at all!
The carbonation is strong with a myriad of tiny bubbles. The liquid is smooth.
As one of my friends told me a few days ago: Just the type of liquid Christmas candy that I was looking for. And I am bound to agree this is a fine beer for a relaxing moment after the family gatherings.
