i love the idea of a wild bock base beer with sangiovese grapes in it, i think that sounds delicious, but these guys have presented an almost astonishingly amateurish version of that, and i was pretty turned off by it. this funked up series has been a huge letdown in my limited experience with it, and i am in no rush to go out and spend money on any more of them. this one has a nice dark brownish red color to it and a contrasting almost pure white head, airly and lacy. the aroma is nice from the base standpoint. the malts smell european, the bock seems strong and earthy, and the fruit gives it a wine appeal, good start. however, the brett in the nose is so gross, wet cheerios and cardboard and sweaty socks, its all messed up. the flavor is like that too, the base beer seems fine, almost wish they wouldnt have tried to make it wild because a strong dark bock type with these wine grapes has a lot of promise underneath a really sloppy funk profile. feet and cheese come to mind here, and although its dry by the end, i cant get past these off flavors. its totally off there, and only the neat base beer saves it for me. i had this on two separate occasions now, and these off flavors are going away slowly, so the beer is in fact improving over time, but still, this probably never should have left the brewery with the level of flaw in it. need some quality control. good ideas executed poorly is almost worse than a mediocre amber ale, this one needs work but should not be abandoned conceptually, the grapes and the base beer are nice...
