A 330ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2015. Purchased recently from the York Beer & Wine shop. Described on the label as a festive stout flavoured with Madagascan vanilla pods and fermented with Belgian yeast.
A: Poured into a cervoise. A deep ruby-brown hue that appears black in the glass. Yields a huge head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Some lacing.
S: Aroma of rich, dark malt with hints of vanilla, mild roasted grain, fruitiness, yeast esters, caramel, subtle brown sugar and faint stewed leaves. Nicely balanced.
T: Tastes of sweet dark malt with a lingering bitter finish. Notes of roasted malt, faint burnt grain, vanilla, mild molasses, fruitiness, yeast esters, subtle brown sugar and stewed leaves. Somewhat sweet, followed by a hefty, malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, with very soft carbonation and decent body. Could be a shade livelier. Mildly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of sweet dark malt, delicate vanilla, fruity yeast esters and bitterness.
O: Rather nice - a tasty vanilla stout. Looks alright (if undercarbonated), while the aroma and flavour are a satisfying mix of dark malt, fruitiness and vanilla. Body is OK, though perhaps a bit too flat. A nice sipper for the cold months. Well worth sampling if you come across it.
