On draught in the Café Royal (Edinburgh).
Very dark suggested by the name. Creamy head.
Toasted malt with some smokiness.
The taste reflects the bouquet with added citrus and tropical fruits.
A rather strange but quite tasty concoction.

Bottle. Pitch black with medium, beige, densed head. Average lacing. Poor head lasting. The aroma are mainly roasted malts - dark fruits, a touch o coffe and dark chocolate. Low hoppy (floral, pine aroma). Again dark malts flavours - mainly dark fruits, low to medium bitterness. Dry, average carbonation, slick texture, medium body. Finish is dry and little bitter. In overall average black IPA, It could be more hoppier and intense in the aroma. Quite good drinkable.

Wasn't sure how to pidgeon hole this beer into a style, but it's a kind of Black IPA really I suppose, but BA doesn't have that as one of her styles.
Half-pint, hand-pulled in The Post Office Vaults, Birmingham on 31 Aug 2013.
As the name suggests, this is black in colour, on top a tanned covering of tight foam.
The nose was malty, over roasted malts with a liquorice note, coal, weak chocolate and coffee also came to mind as I sniffed away at my glass.
Taste wise it was fairly similar to the smells I was getting, but with a semi-hop bitterness throughout each sip: so dark malt led with a hop undertone. The alcohol was hidden well by the flavours and I found it very easy to drink.
Wasn't as rich or smooth in the body: it was being tasted along with a Vanilla Porter which really was rich and smooth, this however was fine for an IPA, black or otherwise, they are not supposed to be smooth.
