(Notes of 22/06/13) Coming in a 500ml brown bottle, bottle-conditioned; BB 01/01/2015, served mildly chilled in a straight imperial pint glass. Notes: The beer label describes it as “Our massively hopped Monkey IPA spanked with the insane addition of root ginger and chilli”.
Appearance: pours a much much more clear light amber colour than Monkey IPA, the carbonation remains mild but constant, topped with a tight and creamy off-white froth.
Smell: quite gingery, on top of an exotic profile quite similar to the beer base Monkey IPA, featuring orangey fruitiness, exotic yeasitness, earthy notes, and decent body of pale malts. I can’t quite smell the chilies, honestly.
Taste: again, where are the chilies?? Except that, the flavour is actually very nice: the lightly sweet pale malt backbone carries the lighter-weight citric-fruity hops in a harmony, without the level of estery complications as in the Monkey IPA, while being supported by decent and soft carbonation. Also, the gingery tones never turn harsh or really assertive in terms of flavour, while in the long finish, following some pronounced, flat-structured hop bitterness, an intriguing touch of warmth or slowly built-up heat does emerge, reminiscent of the existence of chilli (& root ginger) in the brew, for real actually…!
Mouthfeel & Overall: compared with the Monkey IPA tasted before this one, this bottle is far better bottle-conditioned, in that the carbonation comes more healthy, the flavour is not seriously dominated/compromised by the yeasty elements, but at the same time this beer is not that bitter, either. All in all, this is a decent spiced ale deserving some credits, but not as hoppy as it would purport to be. Not a chance.
