22oz bomber courtesy of Victory_Sabre1973. This is the last of his NBS BIF 8.5 beers that he sent me late last fall.
Poured into a stemmed tulip glass, this was an extremely dark brown color, virtually black. Big, creamy, khaki colored head. Spotty, streaky lace.
Big chocolate and vanilla nose to this. Yes, it smells like Oreos. Not getting any hop aroma, or any nasal tell-tales forecasting the high abv percentage.
Like Victory_Sabre1973, I'm finding the vanilla to be the dominant flavor in play when I taste it, but the chocolate aspect isn't far behind. I also agree with him re: the slightly lactose-y thing that happens on the back end. At the finish I'm finding there's a little bit of a roastiness giving things a very slight char note.
Medium bodied, perhaps a little lighter than one might expect for an obvious dessert beer like this, but it's not to a deal breaking extent. Slightly creamy mouthfeel.
I think.I'm enjoying this a little more than Victory_Sabre1973. I freely admit I'm hitting this after a big meal on a long day after a weird, unsettling week (Death in the family, obnoxious pressures at work, car trouble), so maybe I'm just happy to be drinking a big beer like this and being able to exhale a bit, but I'm rather enjoying this. I think it has more flavor than the "standard" version of this he also hit me with (probably should've done a side-by-side), and, with no sign of the high alcohol, it's very drinkable. Thanks, Victory_Sabre1973!

Pours pitch black. 1 finger tan head that doesn't last long at all. No lacing on the glass or foam ring on the side of the glass.
The nose is slightly sweet. There's vanilla on the nose. There's a hint of chocolate on the nose.
Taste - Woah! Deep chocolate and vanilla. More vanilla than chocolate. The flavors do compliment each other well. There's also a lactose element that adds to the other flavors, but it doesn't really hit till the backside.
The body seems a bit lighter than I'd expect. There's a bit of a crisp feeling to this beer.
It's good, but I do think it could have been a bit better.
