Another Butcherknife Award-winner. This traditional Bavarian style is the perfect quaffing ale. A beautiful frothy head combined with notes of banana and clove from the German yeast elevate this hazy late summer masterpiece to the top of our year-round drinking list.

On-tap at Terminal Bar, Denver, CO

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a white collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of bananas are present in the nose along with notes of cloves.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of bananas with a bit more cloves and some subtle hints of wheat.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I thought that this was a very good American representation of a German Hefeweizen and really liked all of the bananas in the smell and taste.

Serving type: on-tap

Appearance: Arrives clear and amber colored with a very small head that fades to a collar; not much lacing

Smell: Bready with some banana and clove esters

Taste: Bread forward with the banana and clove flavors emerging and lingering into the finish; more clove than banana in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low carbonation

Overall: The banana flavors could be more pronounced but the mouthfeel is all wrong for the style

Golden-amber color. I didn't get a whole lot of foam on the pour, but I'll assume I suck at pouring. Very typical wheat aroma in the nose. Taste is, well....some reviewers detect banana, and I guess I do too, but it's not real banana. It's more like banana-flavored Laffy Taffy. There's a candy-like sweetness that I don't recall from any other beer. It's not totally off-putting, but it's not what I'd expect in a Hefeweizen. Not overly carbonated, so it drinks easily enough. Maybe I'll road trip to Steamboat one of these days and try it at the brewery to see if I like it any better there.

Clear amber brew with plenty of foam in the chalice. There's a wee whiff of bananas and cloves. Moderately carbonated in the mouth and rather a light body. A little yeasty. More dry than most Hefeweizens.

The flavor is just odd. Butterscotch and cardboard? I wish I could describe how unusual the taste is, and I don't mean that in a nice way. It's drinkable enough, though, and seems to be well made. There is a little sweetness and no touch of hops as you'd expect. From the 16 oz can purchased at Grapevine Liquors in Denver.

I felt like I needed something like to go with the barbecue that I was eating at the time, so once I saw this on tap I thought this might pair fairly well. This beer features a cloudy golden hue that seems to glow in the light. The head is thick, foamy, and dissipates very slowly to a rocky layer that is retained until the glass is drained. The carbonation is low in terms of visibility. 4/5 The aroma is very typical of the Hefeweizen style with notes of banana and clove really coming out strongly along with a bit of fresh white bread and herbal hops. Very simple and straightforward aroma here that really sticks to the traditional style. 3.75/5 The taste is just like the aroma which is always nice since I know what to expect. The flavor kicks off with just a touch of caramel and quickly transitions into the fresh white bread and the banana, all at the same time. Clove and coriander pepperiness come out immediately behind the banana and linger until the beer is swallowed. There is a light herbal hop presence on the back end that helps to round out the sweetness and avoid the beer becoming overly sweet. There is very little bitterness here and no lingering bitterness. 4.25/5 This beer is medium bodied and full mouth wetting without drying. Carbonation is low and only a slight tickle. There is a slightly viscous feeling that creates a smoothness that permeates the entire mouthfeel. 4/5 This is a very true to style Hefeweizen with no surprises. Simple, straightforward, and easy to drink. Pairs well with heavier food and helps to lighten the meal from an overall perspective. Very enjoyable and fairly sessionable. 4/5

An American He done right. Beautiful cloudy orange with ample head and lacing. Aromas of clove citrus, banana comes more forward on the taste. Some very nice Esters are happening here. Yeast comes on a little heavy on the finish, but banana rounds things out and make things quite appealing. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Way to go Steamboat Springs.
