Pours a cloudy dark brown. 1/4 inch head with slight retention and slight lacing (poured to avoid head by the bartender - I couldn't believe it!). Smells of strong malt, high alcohol content, slight hops, and some distinct spices. Definitely fits the style of an American Barleywine. Smooth and slightly thick mouth feel. Low carbonation levels were present. Tastes of of good hoppiness up front and then a strong malt background. Finishes with a noticeable alcohol flavoring. The aftertaste is slightly of hops, but mostly of strong malt flavoring. Overall, a great beer and possibly the best offering I've had from Flat Branch!.
Had an'06 version of the Barleywine tonight! Appearance and smell are the same. The mouth feel is smooth and crisp (slightly chewy) with a noticeable bitterness. Tastes of sweetness up front, good strong malt in a soft flavor, slight hops noticeable, alcohol is present, but not as strong as the '09 version. Overall, a more subtle version of the '09 version - complex flavors and aromas with a less overwhelming alcohol flavor!.
