We dosed this iteration of the sherry barrel-aged beast with liberal amounts of dates, walnuts, vanilla, and cinnamon. If you just read that and thought, “Sweet lord of hosts, that sounds positively divine,” you’d be 100% correct.

22 oz bomber into a snifter

Typical sludgy espresso appearance, more carbonated than some of it's Modem Tones brethren. The aromas are oak-forward, quite boozy, with notes of hazelnut lingering.

Flavors are complex and layered, with the sweet, grape-y sherry aspects at the front. Lots of the typical Modem Tones' dessert notes come through, but they're well balance by a robust nutty backbone. Not really picking up the added dates here, they seem to be overshadowed by the sherry barrels. Long, sweet finish with lingering residuals.

This is probably my favorite of the series so for. Decadent and 'pastry'-like but well-rounded with lots of nutty and earthy nuances.

Bomber at share. Near black pour with a thin, sturdy beige head. Full aroma of sweet chocolaty malts, vanilla, molasses and sherry. taste brings subtle nutty flavors to the creamy, smooth liquid dessert of a beer with a slow rising warmth. Creamy and decadent.

2021 Sherry Barrel Edition.

A beautifully balanced BA stout. The nose boasts notes of vanilla, cinnamon, and dark fruit. The palate dials back the adjuncts and does a great job of highlighting the dates and sherry barrel. Finishes with a twinge of acidity akin to a robust red wine, while a touch of bitter nuttiness and vanilla beans linger and compliment the boozy warmth. Excellent.

Pours a lovely crane-tinted black with a finger-and-a-half of mocha head. Decent retention and plenty of sloppy lacing.

Amazing aroma with dates and sherry floating atop rich caramel, chocolate and vanilla. Flashes of fig and cinnamon.

Very cinnamon-forward taste. Chocolate is the most prominent flavor beneath that, with vanilla and caramel melded in. Subtle walnut rounds out nice sherry, fig, date and red wine in the finish.

Slick, oily feel with modest carbonation.

The good number of distinctive, big flavors are well blended together. The cinnamon may come on a touch strong at this age, but the sherry, dates and vanilla are fantastic additions to a delicious base.

Received in a trade and shared with JLindros. Knew I had something special here so I saved it for...review #4000!

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown almost black deep darkness with a good thin off white head that fades to leave little wisps but leaves some great sticky legs.

S - Big aromas of walnuts, tons of sweet dates and loads of sweet slightly oxidized sherry. Really nice chocolate as well as sticky caramel sauce. Has loads of that 'fortified wine' aroma with great nuttiness and sweeter, chewy dates.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with tons of sweeter dates and walnuts. Really rich nuttiness followed by big deep almost earthy chocolate flavour. Big oxidized sherry and fortified wine qualities. Really big char and roast along with thick caramel. Good sticky toffee on the finish.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, great body, thick, creamy almost heavy. Alcohol hidden very well without it getting overly syrupy.

O - Overall this was a very solid stout with lovely date and sherry. Super creamy vanilla sticky toffee side. Lovely body. I wish brewers produced more beers with dates and sherry in them as they play off of one another so well in a beer. Just like figs do. As excellent as this was I most certainly would be hard pressed to drink an entire bomber of it. Very glad to have gotten to try this gem.

Pours a little foamy dark colored head, low retention, little lacing, pitch black beer with good legs

Nose loads of sherry and date fruits, with big dark cocoa fudge roast notes, dark char and cocoa, super dark lucious cocoa, big caramel, dulce de leche

Taste is super super sweet, some alcohol booze but not too much, a nice brandy sherry fortified wine like, aged sherry slight oxidized on purpose, mild to medium bitterness, fudgey cocoa and roasty char notes,

Mouth is fuller bod, lush creamy rich, medium to a bit lighter carb, touch of alcohol

Overall pretty nice, enjoyable but hard to drink

Fudgy chocolate meets sweet vanilla marshmallow with a thick syrupy body as the sherry barrel's presence adds woody dates and nougat before the sticky finish.

650ml capped bottle. Monster's Park glass. Pours a dark black body, one finger offwhite head, fair retention and no lacing. Fairly standard appearance for MT. Smell is fascinating- spices, sweet dates, mildly nutty, big vanilla sweetness, milk chocolate fudge and perhaps a bit of dry oak. Flavour follows- very dessert-like with a complex mix of nuttiness, spicy cinnamon, milk chocolate and sweet fruity dates- not quite dark fruit or any suggestion of oxidation, but the dates' sweetness blends in nicely with the chocolate character. Sherry adds a slight dryness along with the cinnamon spice. There's a ton going on, but it isn't anywhere near overpoweringly sweet. It's awesome and a fun one to load onto your palate. Mouthfeel is full bodied, creamy and smooth, appropriately carbonated. Overall, one of the better Modem Tones variants they've done, and they have all been great!
