A spectacle of flavor returns. This single batch of imperial stout was aged for 10 months in V. Sattui Madeira barrels from the Napa, CA area. Beastmaster has always been one of our most versatile stouts, and it proved itself once again by taking to these barrels like a champion, picking up lovely notes of caramel, fruit leather, dried plum, hazelnuts, and vanilla to go along with its rich, chocolaty profile.

Thanks to CAKid for this 22 oz. bottle opened tonight in honor of our just-booked winter trip to Portugal, which will include multiple days in Porto. Can’t wait! Split with my wife.
Black with a minimal but persistent ring of sheet-white. The nose is predominantly jammy with an undercurrent of sweetness. Malts, perhaps.
Beastmaster – Madeira Barrel Aged is heavy on a barrel, & I enjoy contents of said barrel, so the recipient is happy. Until this moment – after 3,500+ reviews – I haven’t really had something I could describe as jammy, until now. This is heavy jam. Morphine on a good night jam (when he was alive, y’know). Big red fruit soaked in brandy on top, with lesser gods of cocoa vanilla, aged leather, & dust. Full; no pastry stout. Light enough & the fortified wine gives it a cheeriness that lends me to believe I could drink multiples. Could, not should.
Fantastic use of the barrel, but I wish the big MT stout I love so much could be on display more; it’s near-drowned in Madeira. Very good. Borderline excellent.
