Pours a very dark brown, near black with long-lasting beige foam in the Jewbelation tumbler (remember He'Brew?). I am not sure what to make of this, but the bitter and fruity hops emerge from the darkness.
This starts with a bit of sweet malt flavor and a touch of applejack, but the bitterness quickly overwhelms. Quite dark tasting with scorched grain. Seems bitter both from the burnt malt and the hops.
Like most everything from Modern Times these last years, they can't seem to help overamping and thrashing every style. This would be quite interesting but it's so utterly black and bitter it's like a parody of the "Cascadian" style. Also undrinkable. From the 16 oz can purchased at Bine & Vine. Dated 11/18/2021. Brewed in Anaheim.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very reddish orange, with slight light transmission in the glass and a two finger dark khaki head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma of mild dark toasted malt, citrus hops, grapefruit, lemon and a touch of coffee. Flavor is pale and lightly toasted dark malt, citrus and piney hops, lemon, grapefruit, yuzu, mild pine and slight coffee. Lingering citrus rind finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. Looks and smells like a classic Cascadian black IPA, but the toastiness is dialed back; the citrus hops are the big character to this ale. The lemon family of citrus are the dominant flavor from the hops. Quite refreshing, and although I'd like a bit more tasted malt flavor, this this was quite enjoyable.
