Notes: This spectacle of West Coast IPA wizardry was lavished with massive quantities of Nelson, Strata, Mosaic, and Centennial hops. Together, this quartet of lupulin-laden stunners yields a soul-stirring symphony of citrus, stone fruit, and tropical character with just enough pleasantly snappy bitterness to really stick the landing. We’re pretty psyched about it; we think you might be, too.

Pours a medium gold with nice head and decent lacing. Smells strongly of fruit and bitter hops. A good, piney, bitter tongue lashing follows on the taste with a variety of fruit flavors; grapefruit for sure, maybe pineapple, and some others. Pretty balanced despite the bitterness and it lives up to the West Coast monikor. Another good IPA from MT, and I wish them success as they restructure. A worthy effort and just a notch below the best ones in San Diego County, cheers!

Had Dungeon Map poured from 12-oz. can, bottom stamped "CANNED ON 11/01/21," into tulip pint.

Pours straw-gold with clarity and 1-finger near-white head, with good retention, leaving some drapes of lace scattered down the glass. Aroma of big citrus and a little malt off pour, with citrus continuing as stone fruits join. Begins sharp citrus and big tropical fruits over a hint of malt, for a nicely balanced mouthfeel, carrying into a big biting finish.

Nice fruity aromas deliver like flavors which however get clobbered by and don't make it all the way to the big bitter finish.

Type: 12-oz. can
Reviewed as: American IPA
Glass: Monkish 16-oz. mug
Price: $12.99 for a 6-pack
From: Windmill Farms in Del Cerro (San Diego), Calif.

Reluctantly purchased this, I think the first cans of a Modern Times IPA in 2021. Just was really disappointed with their hoppy stuff the past year or so - even their core and reissued stuff - and swore them off. I still like their stouts, lagers and pilsners, but just gave up. However, some friends said this one was good and I respect their opinion. Going to give this one a fair shot. Their website called this “This spectacle of West Coast IPA wizardry was lavished with massive quantities of Nelson, Strata, Mosaic, and Centennial hops. Together, this quartet of lupulin-laden stunners yields a soul-stirring symphony of citrus, stone fruit, and tropical character with just enough pleasantly snappy bitterness to really stick the landing. We’re pretty psyched about it; we think you might be, too.” Please be good…

Poured a medium yellow clear color with 3-to-4 fingers of rocky-to-frothy white head. Lots of fast-moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. World-class foamy spiderweb lacing. Perfect retention. (Sight - 4.75)

Smelled big Nelson, followed by an even mix of Strata and Mosaic. Also tangerine, orange citrus, mango, papaya, peach, stone fruit, viney berry, dank weed, pine, rose blossom, floral, hints of black pepper and citrus rind. Not quite as good out of the can. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted almost as good as the nose. In order still got that big Nelson, followed by Strata and Mosaic right behind. Also tangerine, orange citrus, papaya, mango, peach, stone fruit, bitter citrus rind, dank weed, pine, viney berry, rose blossom, floral and hints of black pepper. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, bitter finish. (Feel - 4.50)

Damn. Was surprised at how much I liked this one. Good job, Modern Times. I am tentatively back on their IPAs. (Overall - 4.25)

Poured from a 12 oz can purchased at Baron's Market in Alpine, CA. Pours bright amber with decent foamy head that slowly - but surely - recedes. Slightly muted hops taste with sweet slight malt. Decent. TBQH - tastes like other offerings from MT... they sort of all taste the same.

This beer pours a golden straw color with just the slightest bit of hop haze and a dense white head that is a lacing machine. The nose is crammed full of dank citrus notes, with tangerine, mango, and pineapple most prominent.

Delicious tangerine flavors lead the taste, with the mango and pineapple joined by a lychee flavor that works really well. The mouthfeel is very dry, per the WCIPA style. This beer is definitely in my sweet spot for hop-forward beers.

Picked up a 12 oz single from the BP gas station cooler on Long Shoals Road in Arden 9-14-21 for $2.09. Canned 6-8-21; consumed 11-18-21. Cold stored since purchase.

Beer poured a golden orange with a very nice white head that has great hang time after 10 minutes.

Nose still comes across pretty fresh, citrus and tropical fruit forward.

Taste is a moderate pale malt base that provides the canvas for the orange, peach, and mango hop flavors to play. Finishes with a nice rind balancing finish; 6/10 on my scale.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly smooth and refreshing.

Overall another nice brew from Modern Times. Was surprised to find they distribute to WNC - hope to see more in the future.

Dungeon Map canned 06/23/21 and all 12 ounces looks an orange, yellow, cloudy, hazy, dull golden color. Smells acidic, citrus, orange, lime, pineapple with effervescence remarkable. Taste is funky, musky, earthy, citrus, orange, lemon. A crisp mouthfeel. Tart and bitter. I think I'm getting that teeth sucking, tongue licking, lip smacking *burp* bitterness. Mouth-watering. Pine needle, pine cone bitterness. They make it work.

Sharp and increasingly acidic as you drink. Even when Modern Times makes a supposedly West Coast IPA it swings to the highly acidic. Aroma is inviting with pine and peach. Flavor is resins, citrus peel, and a strong taste of something like bark and burnt cereal.

Rated at 60 IBUs but tastes more bitter to me. Stuffed with hops and pretension, the house signature. I don't find it very drinkable and I miss the more elegant styles of MT brews where hops were treated as an aromatic rather than a weapon. From the 16 oz can dated 06/09/21 on the bottom plus a political message.

When has anyone needed a dungeon map? Aren’t dungeons like all small and enclosed and stuff? I don’t think a map would have helped Socrates or the Man in the Iron Mask or anything. Maybe a hacksaw? But Raul digresses.

So, yeah, here we are with a fairly ripe Westy. One in which that replaced the awesome and amazing Blazing World (well, they screwed the pooch on that one too by changing it from a Hoppy Amber to a basic West Coast… Again, Raul just sighs). Anyway…

Yeah, so here it is in all its splendor - bright, and tropical citrusy, and just ok. Nothing special. Yeah, it’s like Southern California on a clear day - that’s cool, but what else can you give me?

Be well, my minions.

Good head production and OK retention. Body is mostly clear and a coppery amber color.

Nose is true to style: resinous, mildly to moderately dank, with some citrus notes and a bit of tropical fruit. Smells like a throwback, even though most of the hops are relatively modern.

Similar on the palate: a straight forward, pleasant WC IPA. Nothing amazing or special. Orange, mango, papaya, resin, pine, pepper, mild dankness, cracker, white dough. Good amount of bitterness.

Lively and drinkable; a little oily.

Not a bad beer at all; quite good. But it doesn't bring much new to the table, honestly, if anything. I'll happily enjoy the six pack, and won't hesitate to get it again, price dependent.

Can poured into a Modern Times Beer glass

A: Pours golden amber with a frothy eggshell white head that settles to a dense layer and leaves some thick lacing.

S: Nelson fruitiness, mix of pine, citrus zest, and grassy herbal notes, a little tropical and stone fruit, bready malt, and a touch of sweetness.

T: Big Nelson presence up front, white grape and gooseberry, followed with pine and citrus, lemon, lime, grapefruit, and tangerine, tropical and stone fruit, passion fruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, grassy slightly dank herbal notes, bready malt, and a touch of sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Kinda cool to be able to get a West Coast Nelson IPA year round. Might not be a world beater, but it's solid.

12oz can poured into a Sam Adams PP. Pours out a medium gold color with a slight chill haze. Aromas and flavors of pine, mango, mild resin, grapefruit, papaya, some faint mint, and some malty grains. Moderate bitterness and dryness. A good IPA overall, with some West Coast vibes to it.

12oz canned 4/20/21, opened 6/20/21.
1 finger white head with decent retention, hangs in there at a solid cap.
Golden, slight chill haze. Thin, wispy lacing.
Orange, tropical fruit, a light cattiness and some pine in the aroma.
Dank hoppiness with a bit of creamy/bready malt.
Aroma outplays the flavor here.
Medium body and carbonation, creamy mouthfeel and prickly bitterness.
Good to Very Good.

12 ounce can poured into a pint glass. Canned on 4/20/21. Pour is a clear deep golden with a dense finger of foam. Nose has light notes of lemon with some floral character. Bit reaching to say the least. We'll see how it warms up.

Taste is mostly citric malt bready. Fairly rich in body. Touch of lemon oil mid palate and offers a lingering fruited bitterness. Warming does enhance the aroma profile but only so much. Nice level of carbonation emboldens the feel at the same time. Mixed feelings on this one at 7 weeks, I trust a fresh pour might be different.

Pint at Westside Taphouse in West Salem OR.
Clear gold/orange color body with.a small frothy white head. Nice lace.
Aroma seems a bit subdued. Floral hops maybe some citrus.
Very balanced taste. Floral hopping
Good medium and well carbonated mouth feel.
A very easy going West Coast IPA.
Drinkable in extreme. But not too complex.
