This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.
This smells very chocolatey, with caramel, molasses, dark coffee, roasted malt, and bourbon.
There’s a whole lot of beers going into this blend. There’s maybe one thread that is barleywine, the vast majority is stout, so it definitely just tastes like a well made barrel aged stout. It’s aged well for being around 3 years old at this point. There’s no oxidation, and a really pleasantly caramelly and oaky barrel character, with a really nice fudgy and coffee-like malt backbone. There’s a touch of dark fruit, and it’s well balanced and not too sweet.
This is creamy, not very boozy at all, and pretty drinkable for the style.
It’s a shame what happened to Modern Times, I’ve always really enjoyed their barrel aged beers.
