Our friend and passionate beer enthusiast, Alex Kidd of @dontdrinkbeers was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Cancer. Alex has long been a supporter of Modern Times and the Special Projects crew, and his writings and reviews of our beer have contributed to the growth of our barrel-aged program. To help cover his hospital expenses, we're releasing a special edition Altar of the Orc Lord: Barleywine Aged in Tiny Horsey Bourbon Barrels. 100% of the proceeds from this bottle will go directly to Alex and his family.

Bomber at share. Dark amber pour pour, clear, small off-white head. Aroma is pit fruit, tobacco, leather, vaniila, and bourbon. Fruity taste, plums, prunes, figs, sweet, light vanilla, oak and whiskey. Nice textures and mouthfeel.

The beer, while poured with some vigor, never once results in the formation of lingering head. Beige bubbles swirl as the liquid cascades into the glass, but it is quick to settle flat into the snifter it’s poured into.
The nose hits immediately with an abundance of oatmeal raisin cookies. Following closely are notes of brown sugar, dates, and Rolo candies. While both rich and sweet, there is undoubtedly a grittier, oak-forward underbelly that yearns to break through. Time and temperature allows just that; a fantastic complexity.
The flavor profile to this beer, while decidedly comparable to the nose, allows the barrel character to become more evident. Heavily oaked, there’s a great compliment immediately to the rich, molasses-forward bitterness that accompanies. Quick to follow is over-baked cookies, Werther’s caramel, and date pudding.
The weight of the beer rides the line perfectly between sitting comfortably on the palate and leaving just the right amount of residual stickiness. The barrel brings with it a touch of dryness, finishing with a hint of bitterness; it is an alarmingly approachable beer.

Poured on tap at Modern Times Fermentorium. Poured very dark brown - almost black. Dark brown head. The nose is brandy, sweet malts, bourbon, port, vanilla, brown sugar, toffee. The taste largely follows the nose. This one is quite sweet and fruity. It honestly doesn't come across as a barleywine. Sherry/port is strong, along with sugary sweetness. Overall, my least favorite of a tasting of 4 beers.

Bottle. Dark caramel brown color.
Lots going on here, this is great. Stout wine vibes. Caramel, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, fudge, bourbon, oak. Very thick and chewy for a Bw. This has so much flavor and depth it’s hard to set down. Very enjoyable. I’d like to try some of the others to compare.
