We scoured our barrel stock to find some Ethan Billy 1783 barrels aged 2.5 years that had nice caramel qualities. Next, we looked for some chocolate forward tasting Ethereal Mound barrels aged 2.5 years. Finally, we chose a couple just straight up fire Quadruple Flowers barrels with 2 years aging time. When the blend was just right, we got our hands on some Mexican Cocoa Nibs, Toasted Coconut, and Macaroon-cut Coconut and – Voila! – Samoa Cookie in a bottle. Of course, we will always support our local troop when we hear the call. But until that time comes once again, we can appease the cookie cravings with this beautiful, scrumptious little treat.

good heavens. modern times does these huge stouts as well as anyone, and this one is a stunner. love the name, love the liquid. a cool barrel blend, a colossal yet smooth base beer, the right amount of additives, and something really special, cohesive, silky, and exquisite. black as motor oil and just as viscous, just a tiny layer of mocha colored bubbles on top, leggy and sticky. the aroma on this is awesome, bourbon first to me, a whole heap of toasted coconut next, rich but not diabetic, balanced by deep roast, bitter coffee and cocoa notes, and faint cigar smoke. lots of middle malt decadence and long boiled concentrated intensity bringing up the vanilla and honey notes of the whiskey, but this doesnt present as all that boozy for its strength, really sexy and adult. the flavor is as good as the nose, the coconut character is wonderful, natural, just sweet enough, but nutty too, toasted and warm but also rawer and tropical, and with the caramel and chocolate inherent in the whiskey and base beer respectively, this really does approximate a samoa cookie pretty well. slick and palate coating in the feel, more and more chocolate as it warms, straight hersheys, and some light licorice on the back end. gigantic body on it, sweet but not cloying, warm but not hot, complex but not forced, amazing coconut complexion and overall a gorgeous and flavorful imperial stout of the highest order, killer barrel treatment and blending here too, this is next level!

Glossy black with no head at all, looking like a glass of tar.

Far thicker than the vanilla Monster's Park we had before this, but still no where near WeldWerks's Tropical Medianoche, this is warming of caramel coconut flan characteristics, as opposed to the toasted coconut and gooey caramel drenched Samoa cookie I was hoping for.

22 oz bomber into a snifter

So this is Modem Tones - one of the most continually coveted BBA stouts in existence, so I’m grading on a curve here. It’s delicious, but I was hoping for it to be more Samoa-ish. There’s definitely notes of of chocolate and coconut and caramel - and for shits and giggles (not sure if anyone says that anymore), there’s even a good dose of shaved coconut suspended throughout the brew - but if I didn’t know it was called Samoa I’m not sure I would’ve guess they were trying to emulate the cookie. So there - probably the lowest rated BBA stout from MT, but its still the 99.9 percentile of deliciousness.
