Minimal head, no retention.
Aroma is heavily bourbon, with notes of vanilla, oak, plum, and raisin adding complexity. Bourbon overpowers.
Flavor is fairly sweet and raisin dominant initially, with notes of tart cherry taming the sweet, very caramelly malt nicely. Nutty tones and a hint of chocolate surface as it warms. The finish is fairly dry and oaky, with a touch of bourbon warmth that lingers. Becomes smoky and a touch phenolic.
The alcohol is pretty noticeable, a touch harsh in burn, but the mouthfeel is a bit thinner than expected.
I've not had the base beer, so I'm assuming the tart cherry character comes from the barrel. That aspect really elevates this brew. The pappy certainly overwhelms the base beer. Would like to see this aged less in the barrel.
I'd recommend drinking cold unless you like flat bourbon-laced beer.
