Allowing each brewer to play masterbrewer for a day, the Rhinegeist team launches a basil and hop infused American pale wheat ale that pushes the herbal dynamics of American ale to a place where no wheat beer has gone before.
Pale straw and hazy, Portofino crowns with a frothy eggshell cap. Bright aromas of Italian basil rolls onto the nose along with bright citrus and tropical scents. Early sweetness is gentle and like angel food cake with the must of raw grain and baking bread.
The floral character of hops and herb crosses the middle palate with the vivid taste of white grapefruit, tangy orange, pineapple, passionfruit and blackcurrant, shifting the balance toward the hops. Dissipating honey sweetness allows the basil to add a spice of potpourri, leaf and herb on the late palate.
Medium dry, spicy and vegetal, a sense of drinking a salad comes to mind. Neon green character has the beer tasting like wet hopped ale while a spice of gin, black tea and hemp close the session with basil spice and hop bitterness.
