Bringing a little of the Zenne Valley to the Ohio Valley, Rhinegeist brewers look to Belgian brewers and blenders for inspiration fueled by their generous amounts of red berries and oak barrels. While not a Lambic, their sour ale takes on some of those funk and fauna characteristics.

Subliminal Jam leaps right out with a racy mauve appearance and lively with teeming carbonation. A tingle of the nose highlights the beer's acidity while those red berries carry a winey, cidery and funk-filled aroma. Hints of sea air, cellar-like musk and leather decorate the peripheries of scent. Prickling the tongue immediately, the first sip bounces off the tongue with the slimmest sense of wafer, taffy and a dry cracker crispness.

While the bubble pop like Pop Rocks candy on the middle palate, the carbonation brightens the session with raspberry, cranberry, rhubarb, red currant, strawberry and blueberry. The brazen acidity that engulfs the session, brings its own strong vinous, cider and crabapple sourness that tightens the jaws and induces a mouthwatering effect. Trending acetic with a deep berry wine character, a musty finish is accented with damp burlap and weathered citrus.

Light bodied and very dry, Subliminal Jam is a highly fruit-centric sour ale that finishes peppery and sour with a brief aftertaste of leather, oak and a light mossy suggestion. Its inspiration by more earthen, drier and spicier sour ale of Belgium is evident as this Lambic-like beer is a clear departure from the kettle sour ale of contemporary fame.
