Jet black with thick, lingering, tan foam. Notes of cocoa and vanilla are met with aromas dark fruit, chocolate covered berries, and red wine. Medium-high bitterness and medium-high residual sweetness are in good balance, and the body is full and creamy, with just a hint of tannic bite from the red wine barrel on the finish.

Look: Pitch black. One finger of khaki head that immediately dissipates.
Smell: Very sweet, yeasty, mild stone fruit note.
Taste: Complex and layered. Red wine, leather, stone fruit, some toffee sweetness. Hard to find any bitterness. It's more of an earthy balancer. Generally a bit too sweet for my taste.
Mouthfeel: Creamy with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is a hard beer to decide on. It's definitely a love-or-hate kind of brew.

16 oz bottle, poured into a goblet at ~40 degrees F.
L: Pours your typical stout inky black, and forms almost no head, with what little manifests fizzy, brown, and swift of vanishing.
S: Cold, the nose is vinous, over fresh-turned dark earth. As it warms, the red wine notes expand, while the earth recedes.
T: Cold, this opens not unlike sipping a decent merlot, before a wave of soil and sour plum rolls in. The aftertaste lingers as red wine and bitter earth. As it warms, the merlot notes deepen, while the bitter soil fades into the backdrop. Some faint stone fruits mingle with the wine, and there's a soft leather note hovering towards the finish.
F: Full bodied and thick, clings to the teeth.
O: Interesting, and contrary to Rhinegeist's usual motif, not a hop bomb.

From the bottle in a snifter. This exceptional imperial pours a
dark coal black with a nice head of tan foam that settles to a
thick ring, thin dusty layer, and shows some nice light lacing.
Nose of rich red Merlot wine, leather, dark roasted malts, dark
cocoa, and faint herbal touches with hints of sweet caramel
malts. Flavors knock it out of the park! Dark red wine notes
mingle with precision against a backdrop of oak, dark cocoa,
dark coffee, subtle anise, char, roast, hints of vanilla, leather,
and tobacco. Excellent mouth feel for the blend, and IMHO
the best wine aged brew I might of ever had. Full body, smooth,
coating, rich, light and subtly prickly carbonation, and a
medium dry finish with subtle tartness.
Overall-----excellence from an excellent brewery!
Cheers
