Appearance - Pours a dark walnut colour, near-opaque, good lacing, and a 1 finger mocha head which dissipates to nothing.
Smell - Quite sweet and fruity, like chocolate, cherry, a hint of raisin toast and burnt biscuit. A hint of cherry kirsch.
Taste - Those fire roasted malts coming through, with dominant toast flavours and a hint of pure dark chocolate. That kirsch isn't as predominant in the flavour, with just a slight hint in the aftertaste. Mineral finish, and a slight citrus tang to finish. Quite clean for a dark brew.
Mouthfeel - A fairly strong numbing tingle on the tongue, moderate oil and rich body. Plenty of foam and cream as drunk. Luxurious and clean, if not slightly over-carbonated.
Overall - A highly drinkable dark larger and a clean flavour, but the mineral and bitter flavours are not fully balanced by some much needed sweetness. Gets close to the mark and a bump up in ABV could help smooth some of the rough edges.
