Growler filled yesterday. I had this last year, but it tasted obviously rushed as they had such a high demand and couldn't keep up. Hopefully they got past those issues now, but I'm reviewing it either way, as if it still has rushed lager flavors, it deserves the review now.
A heavily forced pour yields a decent but smaller fizzy bubble 1/3 finger head that fades at a med pace, mild lacing, a very clear amber reddish orange coppery beer.
Nose is decent, maybe a bit rushed but not that bad, big fruity lager aromas, lots of fruity lager yeast notes, some straw and pilsner notes, a hint of a sweeter toasty Munich like malt, a hint of minerality and even a little honey note, and more coppery malts as it warms a bit. When I really get a big nose, I start to get that faint hint of a rushed lagering, like mineral not sulfur, but something. Luckily the fruity aromas die off quickly as they seem a bit off for a Vienna Lager, and that nice toasted Vienna or Munich like malt comes through nicely.
Taste brings caramel actually, sweet caramel and toasted malts, almost candy like but not quite that far. Into a nice toasted Vienna malt, or maybe Munich, little grainy and straw like. Luckily no real fruity lager esters, maybe they disappeared by the time I tasted it, as they had with the nose, although I'm still picking them up on the nose a bit. A touch of a minerality again, also not sulfur but something similar, very light but a mineral nonetheless. In the background a hint of a grassy hop note. Finish is dry-ish, a bit crisp, touch more grassy hop, more grainy straw toasted Vienna malt flavors lingering.
Mouth is med to lighter bod, a bit crisp, a bit light on the carbonation too. I don't think they quite have the growler filling carbonation stage down yet, as it's light on carbonation on the flavor and head.
Overall not bad, luckily nothing like the rushed taste I had last year, very little minerality notes, a touch of fruity lager esters on the aroma but not on the flavor, nice toasty Vienna and Munich malts, but the big sweet caramel flavor on the taste makes me go "huh?", almost as if they used American Caramel/Crystal malts with the Vienna and Munich. Not quite sure, and obviously not decoction mashed, but who does that outside of Germany really. Still pretty enjoyable and great for a hot summer day sitting on the lake.
