BOTTLE: Best before: 2/2016. Appealing orange label. Branded black pry-off crown cap. Brown glass. 33cl.
Served cold into a pilsner glass in Helsinki, Finland. Expectations are average. Reviewed live as a weizenbier per the label.
5.0% ABV.
APPEARANCE: Quarter inch head of white colour. Recedes within ~1 minute, leaving no lacing.
Body colour is a hazy nontransparent dark yellow of average vibrance. I see no yeast or sediment.
Appears adequately carbonated. Not the vibrant orange-yellow of the best hefeweizens, but generally appealing.
AROMA: Lightly lactic, actually. Lemony twang goes too far here. The wheat base is nice, but the yeast is a bit lacking, bringing only a bit of banana to the table. I don't find much clove or rich vitaminy notes. Hop character is (aptly) minimal.
The almost farmhouse-y lemony acidity and lactic notes are problematic, but I'm optimistic. Some orange peel would be a welcome addition.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Very nice, albeit simple. Boasts a fresh wheat backbone with some clean barley filling it out. Yeasty notes of genuine banana lend it a fruity component which plays well with the mild (also fruity) hop profile. Sure, it's missing clove and orange peel, but subtle lemony twang helps make it up with some citrus.
The lactic acid noticed in the aroma is luckily absent in the taste. It's a balanced, refreshing brew overall with a cohesive enjoyable build. I like it, even if it leaves much to be desired in terms of dialed-in balance and depth of flavour.
TEXTURE: Refreshing, light-bodied, crisp, overcarbonated, smooth, and wet. Executed to-style.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.
OVERALL: Very drinkable. It's a pleasant hefeweizen and will satisfy fans of the style. Not world-class or close to it, but nice for a Finnish hefeweizen and true to tradition. I'd happily get this again (ideally on-draught). Has me curious to try other beers from Bryggeri, but the sharp overcarbonation does hold it back.
