BOTTLE: Best before: 03/2016. Brown glass, with an orange label and a branded black pry-off crown cap.
5.6% ABV.
Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are above average. Reviewed live as a golden ale per the label.
HEAD: ~4 inches wide. Off-white colour. Smooth even consistency. Nice complexion. Retention is excellent - ~10 minutes. Leaves light coating lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.
BODY: Murky dull copper-orange. Not exactly a vibrant golden colour (like you'd expect in a good example of a golden ale). No yeast is visible.
Appears well-carbonated, if not overly so. Overall, it's a generally appealing appearance for a golden ale.
AROMA: Has too much hop bitterness - and it's only from generic floral hops, anyway - not citrus, herb, resins, oils, etc. Pale malts. Some raw plant-like hop bitterness.
An odd aroma for a golden ale. Suggests an imbalanced beer with an uninteresting build. I find no off-notes or booziness.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Follows the aroma in its imbalance. It's also rather generic, featuring only tired pale malts and soulless floral hops. Not much of a golden ale build, with an uninteresting hop profile and a malt backbone practically indistinguishable from many pale ales.
Flavour duration and intensity are average. Depth of flavour is below average.
I do like it for what it is, but it could use a lot of work. Not a gestalt brew, nor really a cohesive one. It's one clear what they're going for, but it isn't a golden ale.
TEXTURE: Overcarbonated, coating, medium-bodied, smooth, wet, and a bit oily (to its detriment). Doesn't feel like it fits the taste, nor is it right for the style. This texture fails to elevate the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: Middling work from Bryggeri. Not a beer I'd buy again, but better than many Finnish beers it shares shelves with. Drinkable for what it is, but ultimately rather forgettable.
