Dark amber with a russet tint in the tall Maredsous goblet. Lovely head on pouring from the growler. Bubbles streaming after every sip. Pleasant fruity aroma with a whiff of sweet Vermouth. Rich and foamy mouthfeel.
Roasted and caramel malt flavors dominate. Quite a dry yeasty finish. Robust flavor but it also has an almost watery refreshing character. Fruity and tangy. Flavors of tangerine and a touch of fruit cake. Appley flavor and a hint of sweet beets. Just the right sweetness, and it tastes like malt rather than candy. I am going to have to taste this alongside some of the popular Belgians. I think it invites comparison.
Tremendously drinkable Dubbel with plenty of character but without the cloying tendency some of these have. An intriguing variety of flavors that maintain a pleasing beery sensation. I think Benchmark should get some attention from the Dubbel and Tripel that are on their regular rotation. From the jug purchased at the brewery.
