On tap at O’Brien’s Pub in Kearny Mesa, CA
10oz pour – 02/26/2015
A: The Hildegard arrives a soft caramel color body with a slight hazy glow to it. There is a smallish paper white foam cap that slowly settles to a ring around the brim of the glass. A bit of broken webbed lacing decorates the walls as I make my way through the drink.
S: The nose is a bit more refreshing than expected. Still comes with a big caramel malt presence and some stinging alcohol up front as I anticipated. But I do sense a touch of dank hops by way of pine, citrus, grapefruit, along with a whisper of pineapple fruit there. Not exactly a booze bomb which is nice.
T: The flavor however is quite boozy for me with a mass amount of caramel malt sweetness to it. There is some moderate bitterness there but just not nearly enough to cut this one down and make it any more manageable for its size. I get some grapefruit and pine notes accompanied with a touch of dank herbals but they are fairly concealed by the harsh alcohol and cloying sweetness. Pretty much drinks as a hop wine. Not at all to my liking and definitely not the type of Triple IPA I tend to seek out.
M: Medium body with a pretty smooth feel and a dryish finish. There is only a moderate amount of actual perceived bitterness to the beer and a big stinging hot alcohol presence washing over.
D: Too much, too much. Way too boozy and sweet without the proper hop charge to balance. I can’t get on board with some of these other reviews here. This is nowhere near the ranks of Younger, Simtra, Expo, or the Miser. We are not close. Not to be a repeat for me.

Pure tropical fruit juice on the smell and taste. Amazing beer. Had on the same day as Pliny the younger and is in the same ballpark.

On tap at Ritual Tavern. Served in a 10-oz goblet, slightly chilled.
Light orange, murky, with a slight head.
Smells of bright fruit, caramel, and some hop aroma. Slight booziness comes through.
First - marmalade sweetness with orange peel and citrus and then - an assertive load of west-American hops and alcohol bite.
Full-bodied, syrupy viscosity. High carbonation contributed to the EtOH's bite. Can't drink more than a sip at a time.
Overall, a respectable triple IPA with high ABV - and a paradigm shift for Benchmark - that doesn't overdo on the booziness like the Rip Current's Hop Wine, and still manages to taste more like an IPA than a barleywine.
Update: 2/8/16: 3.36
