1L howler from Sherbrooke Liquor store, where they simply (and rather unimaginatively) call it 'Belgian Golden Strong' - sorry - I'm sure it's just a space issue, as ever was, eh?

This beer pours a mostly clear, medium copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves a bit of streaky and spongy lace around the glass as it steadily evaporates.

It smells of bready and crackery caramel malt, a twinge of acerbic yeastiness, mixed and matched earthy spices, a tame candi sugar sweetness, and some weak leafy, musty, and perfumed floral green hop bitters. The taste is semi-sweet, grainy and doughy caramel malt, a bit of indistinct tropical fruitiness, now sort of sedate yeasty notes, some white pepper (and maybe coriander?) spice, further warm (in the boozy sense) citrusy esters, and a consistently understated leafy, weedy, and musky floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is adequate in its palate-supporting frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and mostly smooth, with a wee airy creaminess perking up once things get out of the ol' basement fridge temperature zone. It finishes well off-dry, the big malt, burgeoning alcohol measure, and lingering inborn fruitiness keeping me nice and tight.

Overall, this is a generally well-made version of the style, one which reminds me of, well, Duvel, in its solid base (malt, spice, and hop), not to mention the heat that shows up not too long after kick-off. A bit of a challenge to which to acclimatize, but I verily got 'er done, and now it's time to attend to more mundane requirements of the soul.
