Very malty with the banana bread flavors and aroma, to compliment the thick, munchy mouthfeel that makes this beer style a wonderful experience. There also is a fair hint of bubblegum within the palate. While it has that slight zesty bitterness, it’s rounded out nicely with the sweetness from the malt and parts of the high alcohol. While showing a brown-to-mahogany color, this is robust and balanced for a malt-forward beer! In fact, it reminds me of a quadrupel, like from La Trappe, than a wee heavy. Although lacking the peat smoke that Scottish ales can bring, this is a more local, less ridiculously carbonated Quadrupel from La Trappe. Another good non-peat scotch ale is the Loch Down from Arcadia Brewing Company in Kalamazoo and, for a more lighter body, the Kilt Lifter from Moylan's Brewing Company in Novato (Don't let the not-so-classy beer name discourage you. This is a good beer!)
