May 21st, 2015 - I love the eccentricity of the Astral Scottish Extra. In the glass it looks standard to the style, with a deep, dark mahogany color and a thinnish head. The smell is quite curious, featuring both cobwebs and wet tree bark, while the flavor is a little more restrained. It starts with sweetness and blushes of cream soda and root beer. That herbal mainline has a lot of sassafras and a tiny touch of anise and absinthe. It's curious, but makes for a great scotch ale that isn't exceedingly sweet and *just* right.

With a straight-up mahogany color, it boasts a very balanced taste of caramel and bready malts, along with slightly bright dried fruits, a little grapefruit and some warm spices. The flavors are well mixed together without having an ID crisis and the mouthfeel is fantastic! Should make for a great competitor to the Karl Strauss’ Red Trolley Ale, albeit a slightly less sweet and biscuity version of it with some warm spices! George Jetson will approve! :)

Pours a dark coppery color in the Affligem chalice with a pleasant but not outstanding foam. Brewery calls this one a Scottish 80/ and rates it at 21 IBU. It's neither very smokey or hoppy, but a big and rather simple taste of roasted malt. Quite adequate carbonation.
Warm and roasty in the mouth. A light fruity smoke flavor that is not very obtrusive. The smoke doesn't jog the memory with any precise flavor, but adds that unmistakable Scottish flair. A tang of bitterness at the end is welcome. They say this will be one of the regular beers. It's quite quaffable at the modest ABV.Brought a jug home from the brewery in the Miramar industrial area.
