A Black IPA on tap at the brewpub. Very dark brown with a ruby glint in the Duvel tulip. Modest aroma of pine-scented hops and roasted grains.
Somewhat hot with alcohol, which amps up the hops and general spiciness. Bold flavors, with burnt malt and tanygy mouthfeel. A little sharp with a bitter aftertaste. The interesting spicy and piney hop flavors give this a distinctive taste. More resiny and less bitter than most big IPAs.
A rich and hoppy strong beer that manages to be highly drinkable. This seems like the ideal prototype for a Black IPA. Less dank, more pleasurable.
