From the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This unique brew that is a blend of
barrel-aged Bison and Tannenbaum Christmas pours a brownish black
with a nice head of tan foam that settles to a thick ring, thick clumping
layer, and sports some light lacing. Nose of ginger, toffee, plum, raisin,
clove, nutmeg, dark chocolate, orange zest, and touches of dark roast
and faint coffee. Flavors follow but surpass with a unique presentation
of chocolate orange (!), clove, ginger, light toffee, dark chocolate touches,
dark coffee hints, dark raisins, subtle oak, and dates with faint char
and roast. Nice mouth feel; medium full body, medium light carbonation,
and a herbal laced bitter malt finish.
Of note, warmth brings dark licorice touches as well with a cinnamon
that gets a little loud with said warmth.
Overall---there is a lot going on in this brew....that said it could use some
balance....it literally seems it is not sure what it wants to be----stout...strong
ale....Christmas ale....spiced ale.....not sure. It is complex, but it just doesn't
ring in the holiday spirit. More is not always better.....muddled comes to mind.
Dig the brewery, but this one missed me.
Cheers
