Poured hazy, bright straw coloured, with nice lingering head. Nice floral/fruity scent, and light refreshing floral hops taste. A little mild on the hops makes this one an easy drinker. Bravo to 5 Paddles on this one, this is a great summer thirst quencher! Will definitely make a trip to buy a few more bottles.

The mistake Ontario brewers historically make trying to emulate West-Coast beers is adding too much caramel malt. There appears to be no chance of that here. San Diego is a sunny place and any beer with that city in its name should be correspondingly light and bright. San Diego Tap Water most certainly is.
A proper Southern California pale ale should smell fruity enough to pass for juice. This could fool even a nutritionist. Tropical goodness radiates from the glass: pineapple, green mango, passionfruit and apricot. Die-hard hopheads be warned - this is not an IPA so it lacks that truly piercing, pompous hoppiness.
The palate is also very mild; turns out there's not quite enough juice to be tasted right through to the finish. In place of the fruit bowl is a big teapot of steeped rose petals. Seriously, the mouth becomes a flower shop. Delicate rose and green tea notes ring out above a rather muted cereal graininess.
It should be obvious but I think it bears repeating: this is not an IPA. In fact, in many ways, it's the antithesis to an IPA; rather than heavy-handed hoppiness, bruising bitterness and rich malt, a pale ale like this is meant for casual, carefree drinking. And this recipe suits the profile perfectly.
Indeed, San Diego Tap Water is an easy-breezy pale ale that, true to name, goes down as easy as (hop-flavoured) water. The lack of bitterness but persisting fruity and floral notes make for the utmost pleasant quencher. You can tell this brewer spent time in the Gaslamp Quarter - he got it right.
