Brown Dog looks black at most angles; it takes a strong light source to reveal those hushed chestnut tones around the base. The beer looks as though it escaped a roaring fire coated head-to-toe in ashes - literally, even its head is stained and seemingly sooty (and appropriately leaves a 'collar' of lace).
The aroma is so drenched in hoppy resins I almost feel the need to ring out the glass over the sink for concern it'll make my countertop all sticky. It smells like the brewer went deep into the forest, gathered a huge pile of leaves, shrubs, tree bark and cones and made a campfire out of it all.
That smoky note actually becomes a little acrid (like old coffee) and, combined with a blister-inducing bitterness, completely overhauls the gentle, nutty-sweet side of the malts. Otherwise, however, that dark chocolate/mocha flavour is a hit and gives this 6.3% offering a significantly strong impact.
But let's not give malt all the credit - the corner office belongs to hops. They call the shots here. There's a kind of sappy, spicy, mildewed, wet moss-like dankness that's cut only by a quick-lived mid-palate injection of citrusy acidity and then reclaims the mouth even before the finish can set in.
I have a huge soft spot for our canine friends but Brown Dog isn't one I'd adopt. Unlike my favourite American Strong Ales and Black IPAs, this one didn't strike the right balance of roasted grain and resinous hops - not the balance between the two elements but balance of the elements themselves; both were a bit out-of-whack and over-the-top, the roast too acrid and the IBUs too astringent.

Package: 650 ml bottle.
Appearance - Dark brown.
Smell - Floral hoppy.
Taste - Malty, chocolate, touch of burnt malt.
Mouthfeel - Surprisingly light on the palate with good hop finish on the side of the tongue.
Overall - The 5 Paddles always put out the something that is pretty good, this is excellent. It has the malt feel of a stout, the hoppiness of an IPA, and the smooth finish of a light ale. Thumbs up.
