From tasting notes 03/23/17
Had on-tap @ Final Gravity in Roseville, CA
Appearance - Served up in a 11.5oz snifter, near black / ruddy brown with a thin, velvety layer of suds. Good lacing, with broken webbing and spotting.
Smell - Very mocha like aroma with notes of chocolate, coffee and caramel. Spices sit beneath this and bring a bit of heat to the nostrils as well.
Taste - Follows the nose, with caramel and coffee roast upfront and some milk chocolate flavor following closely behind. Spices come through mid-taste with a bit of cinnamon, and then the chili heat kicks in, becoming the prominent flavor in the finish as the caramel and light coffee roast take a backseat. Aftertaste lingers with sweet, heat and faint earth.
Mouthfeel - Medium in body with moderate, tingly carbonation. Slick texture with an easy, slightly dry finish.
Overall - I loved the OG Wakey, and this Mexican spiced variant is right up there with the better Mexican spiced dark ales I've had. I'm hopeful they'll release this in cans again, because i passed on the first release and now regret it.
