This pilsner was brewed in collaboration with the Detroit zoo as the first beer in the survival series. This pilsner is crisp and refreshing with a portion of proceeds going to the Detroit zoological society who leads federal recovery programs to protect piping plover birds and other endangered species.

Great Lakes Piping Plovers are tiny shorebirds that make shallow nests on the beaches of northern Michigan. By 1986 600 nesting pairs had dwindled to just 17. The Detroit Zoological society leads a federal recovery program to hatch abandoned eggs and rear the chicks until they can be released to join wild Plovers.

Very nice pilsner! Poured from can to IPA glass. Clear and yellow, with a finger or so of rocky head. Light gold and clear. Nice aromas of cracker, lemon, grass, white pepper, and herbal hops. Very nice flavors of bready, doughy malt, lemon biscuit, and an earthy, herbal finish, and almost sweet at the end. Quite refreshing!

16 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 6/21/2019. Pours fairly crystal clear medium golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense/creamy/rocky white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with with great balance of pils malts and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of big cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great robustness, and balance of pils malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no astringent flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with no fruity/yeasty notes. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is an excellent Czech pilsner! All around great robustness, and balance of pils malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, refreshing, and fairly crisp/clean to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish; nicely soft feel. very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Awesome clean/rich Pils malt showcase, with nice noble hop presence/balance. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. A really enjoyable offering, and impressive spot on style example as expected.
