Picked up at taproom over a year ago along with some other brews – no receipt. Reviewed 11/29/19.
Undated bottle. Stored in reefer at taproom then stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Dark brown, translucent.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to the light, still opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.5 cm, aggressive center pour), dark khaki, high density with a few small surface rocks, good retention, diminishing to a four mm crown and complete cap. Head retraction leaves a slightly torn curtain of tiny-bubbled lacing.
Lacing – Excellent! Wide sheet of tiny bubbles with three-dimensional ridges. See also above.
Aroma – 4 – Coffee and dark chocolate initially.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins slightly bitter. Predominant tastes are cocoa and coffee, not specifically expresso. Molasses is weakly present on the after taste, but any vanilla is beneath my level of detectability. No alcohol (9.2 % ABV) flavor or aroma, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. A mild gastric glow occurs.
Palate – 4 - Full, chewy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25. This is a taproom exclusive so you shouldn’t be able to find it at HEB or Spec’s. An excellent coffee stout from a brewery that produces some fine small-batch IPAs with local fruits.
