Braunfelser Kolsch from 5 Stones. 16 oz can purchased from 5 Stones (09/11/21), New Braunfels, TX. $13.48 (including tax)/4-pack ($0.279/oz). Stored at reefer in store and at 40 degrees after purchase. Reviewed 28/02/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “KOLSCH CANNED ON 09/16/21”. Served at 46.5 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 57.0 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Straw (SRM 3), clear.
Body – Pale Gold (SRM 4), clear. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Average (Maximum four cm, aggressive center pour), white smoke, poor retention, diminishing to a two to three mm crown fed by moderate carbonation and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.5 – Malted barley, floral hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins slightly sweet and malty, quickly shifting to a light floral bitterness. No yeast. No ethanol (5.2 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends dry.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium, lightly syrupy, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Surprisingly pleasing Kolsch.
