Canned 3/17/16; drank 4/8/16 @ the Yarchives.

Poured from the can into a glass.

Cloudy orange appearance.

A violent pour yielded a HUGE eggshell head; a curtain of frothy lace.

Orange citrus & mild honey notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Orange citrus & faint honey flavors up front; mild grapefruit bite on the finish. No booze heat. Pleasant & fruity; mild enough to be dangerous considering the abv. Good!

A twelve ounce can dated 08/08/16 and stamped Citra on the bottom with the date.

Look- Pours a nearly transparent dark gold with a generous finger of white foam.

Smell- Very floral like a bouquet of flowers, along with passionfruit, grapefruit and a tease of malt in the back.

Taste- Once again I'm getting floral notes up front followed by grapefruit, pineapple, a hint of passionfruit and some malt in the finish.

Feel- Resiny hop oil with a bitter but somewhat slick finish. It must be that malt backbone?

Overall- Not quite what I expect in a Citra DIPA with the smell and taste leaning heavily floral, but a rather good beer nonetheless. A solid but not overpowering hop presence with a somewhat chewy and slick malt backbone make for a more balanced and very drinkable 8.1% DIPA. It's definitely worth a try!

Draft: Poured a pale blonde color ale with a light foamy head. Aroma of citrusy and light tropical hops is offset by some cereal malt notes. Taste is a mix of cereal notes with some light citrusy hops with light floral fruity notes. Body is average with good carbonation. Not bad but appears they are not getting as much flavours form Citra as I had expected.

Pours a slighty rusty copper with a plump head of creamy white foam.

Noticeable aroma of Citra hops, but not in your face. Orange, grapefruit, and slight tropical notes.

Grapefruit, guava, orange, and slightly resinous.

Light-medium bodied, medium carbonation, resinous, bitter, citrusy and slightly tropical.

Overall, definitely not your average beer here, a few tweaks and I think BuckleDown could have something amazing.

Pours a dark hazy copper color with a 2 finger off-white head. The head slowly dissipates leaving a nice sticky lacing along the top.

Smell is a formidable burst of tropical fruits, citrus and citra hop aromas. Bit of alcohol undertones come through as well, but not distracting.

Taste was a bit of a disappointment here - it just didn't live up to the big smell. The hops are rather subdued and the tropical and citrus flavors are not very strong. Bit of a piney resinous aftertaste with mild bitterness. This is a very balanced brew between the hops and the malts, but given the smells I was expecting a bit more from the hops. The flavors hide the BAV well at first, but as it warms up, you start to get a boozy alcoholic taste coming through. Doesn't really cover that ABV all that much.

Moderate carbonation gives this brew a nice feel. There is some heft to the brew, but its still smooth and drinkable.

Overall: Nice offering from BuckleDown. Although I personally found the taste to be a bit disappointing, there is something to be said for a more reserved DIPA. Plenty of hop bombs to go around, but not as many like this. Even so, there is just something too reserved about the hop flavors.

12oz can, marked citra, dated 02.08.2016, poured into a Three Floyds XV Anniversary pint glass.

The beer pours a clear copper color, a touch of haze and a few bubbles rising to the top of the glass where a nice firm head rests, about two fingers high with great retention and plenty of the lace. The aroma is pleasant, citrus peel and tropical fruits and nice and bright while the counterbalance is a strong bready malt profile that has a hefty amount of sweetness. The flavors are in line, soft citrus peel, light fruitiness and an assertive malt profile, bready, hearty and sweet. The mouthfeel is good, coating, medium body with moderate carbonation and a crisp finish.

Verdict: A nice DIPA from BuckleDown. Ample hops that are balanced by a nice malt bill, easy going that doesn't show a trace of the 8.10% ABV. I wish it was a big more bitter and bursting with hops, but the restraint is nice in its own right. Probably not a beer I'd buy regularly, but another good local option to fit into the rotation.

The Citra Clencher is alive and well at hay market. It poured a clear copper with thin white head that left a nice lace. The scent was a disappointment as the pine and citus flare from citra hop was lacking. The taste was evenly balanced with good pine like bitterness at the finish. The Mouthfeel was fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall ot is certainly worth a try.

Smells great, lots of citra hop aroma.

Taste does not quite live up to the nose. Strong malt body, not as hoppy as I expected, but that wasn't the issue. The issue was a slight soapy taste I detected. Kind of put me off, but it didn't dominate the taste.

Served from tap in a tulip glass at Bigby's Pour House - Rolling Meadows.

Haven't had a chance to grab a BuckleDown brew since a bachelor party at Haymarket last summer, so I had to grab a pint here (and all the better, considering this one has 16 ratings without a single review...real helpful, guys...). It pours a mostly clear amber-brass topped by a half-finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises grapefruit zest, light Sunny D, light leek, mild biscuit, and a few kisses of pine resin. The taste brings in more of the same, the hops surprisingly not overpowering my tongue (a usual occurrence when it comes to Citra-heavy brews). The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a nice DIPA, nothing incredibly special or head-turning, but I'd drink another.
