Cryo Eukanot, Simcoe, Strata, Cryo Loral.
When our beloved double IPA, Clencher was just a baby and in draft-form only, we rotated the hop bill...Always Simcoe, and another partner hop. We used Mosaic, Crystal, Centennial, Amarillo...you get the picture. We ended on Citra and loved it. So we stayed there. And we were happy.
BUT, now the hop selection is goddamn ridiculous and making beer creation so much fun. So we're playing with our dog again.
ome notes on Clencher 1 from Ike, our Brewmaster:
Clencher 1 is a return to the roots of the Clencher series as we imagined it back in 2014. Clencher has always been an exploration in hop intensity - not a set hop configuration. Due to ingredient limitations in 2015-2018 we ended up locking large contracts of Citra and Simcoe to support our production needs and not have out-of-stock issues.
The hop market has loosened up and we've re-worked our packaging infrastructure. So now the chains are off of the brew team!
The Clencher plan for 2019 is not built around single-hop expressions. Our brewers are able to create more nuisanced and dynamic beers by blending hops. Each edition in the series will have different hops, and a different total number of different hops in the blend.
Clencher 1 is an exploration of new-school, fruit forward hops. It also leans heavily on two Cryo varieties - laurel and ekuanot. Everyone’s darling hop - Strata - is included for it’s intense tropical profile. And Simcoe rounds out the blend to add a touch of dank resin.
A few process changes add to this reimagined Clencher.
Clarity:
We’ve added a bit of oat malt to the grain bill, while keeping everything else about the malt profile exactly the same as it’s been since 2014. We’re looking for a slight protein haze while accentuating the mouthfeel. Clencher 1 isn’t a “hazy” but will have a more rustic appearance.
Dry Hopping:
To intensify the hop character of Clencher 1, we’re moving to a double dry hopped (DDH) protocol. DDH gives a distinct hop haze as well as a much more intense flavor and aroma.

12 oz can from Tavour. Cloudy orange/golden pour, sizable foamy head. Aroma is soft citrusy and bready notes. With the taste comes some light dankness, orange zest, creamy feel.

Hazy, peach colored body; thick, sticky, soapy bodied head; rings and globs of foam cling to the inside of the glass. Light citrus and citrus pith aroma; grapefruit. Biscuit malt base; milkshake-like sweetness; very bitter and citric. Heavy body; warm and biting on the palate; alcohol dryness.
I could find very little information about this beer other than the hop varietals used (as listed on the can - canned 03/26/19): Cryo Eukanot, Simcoe, Strata, Cryo Loral). The beer certainly has a DIPA punch but also seems to have a rather limited taste spectrum, primarily dull and bitter. I wouldn't turn down another chance at this one, but there is little that drive me towards purchasing another one.

Pours a hazy orange, frothy white head, tons of lacing.
Aroma of ripe stone fruit.
Taste is similar, I guess its their version of a NEIPA. Sweet
Thick body.
First impresssions count, I think its pretty solid, but I like the original Clencher better. Probably have a hard time having two.
