Take away the expectation of coconut, and it's an enjoyable porter.

An aggressive pour yields a dark brown that borders on dark cola but still has a little glint of ruby/garnet at the corner in the light. Massive rocky solid brown head appears thick and sticky and delicious. Sticky lacing. Yes please!

Nose is a bit of a disappointment after the excitement of the pour. There's just... not that much there. Cold it's mostly just metallic. I'm gonna let this sit and warm a bit and hope it opens up.
...OK back to it. As I suspected letting it sit for a moment was a good call. It opens up a little bit, but I was still left wishing for more. The metal settles and fades, and a generic toasty malt presence rises to replace it. Roast and toast. Knowing the adjuncts I could be convinced that I can find some nutty coconut husk, but without the label I would never pick it out on my own. I seem to be alone in this assessment, so I suppose it's possible it's just an old can, but with no date coding I have no choice but to take it as is. *shrug*

Flavour also has that: I could identify some of the adjuncts if I really wanted to, but I wouldn't find them without the label as a guide from the nose. Some nice toast/roast and what little chocolate suggestion I find just feels like standard roasty porter malts. Finish has a nice fudgy ribbon and a decent coffee bitterness and faint ashy/smoky dryness. I dunno man. It's... fine? If I was just looking for a standard porter, I'd say this is fine and enjoyable enough but not particularly special. But give that it's supposed to be chocolate and coconut it's very underwhelming.
Smoothe body ends abruptly in a dry earthy finish. Bright carbonation that does not overwhelm, but it's all a little thin and just... leaves me wanting more.

Poured from my Canadian Growler into a snifter
L- Dark chocolate brown with a tan head that quickly dissipated.
S- Rich smell consisting of chocolate, espresso, vanilla, coconut, and caramel.
T- Same as smell but not as powerful. Also detecting a slight cherry or currant flavor.
F- Pretty light for the style with an off putting sticky sweetness left in your mouth.
O- It has a powerful smell but the taste is very underwhelming. It also tastes like it has no hops which would add more depth to the taste and help cut the sweetness.

Another offering from a seemingly ending number of new west coast Canadian craft brewers available here in good ol medicine hat

In summary, a very quaffable combination of classic porter sensibility and just the right amount of coconut to add that extra bit of artistic flavor. My fear was the coconut would be too over-the-top or add too much sweetness. Thankfully I had nothing to fear..worth sampling..

A- Awesome labeling...love the deep blue coloration...very masculine looking! The beer itself is looking pretty sweet with a thick creamy two finger head that dissipates rather slowly, leaving behind a frothy dense layer over the brew, and this is tan & brown in color. The beer itself is a very deep brown, clear but opaque and the carbonation is plentiful and lumbering. Lacing is most excellent with an entire film of foamy goodness clinging to the side of the glass!

S- Aromas of vanilla, toasted coconut, heavy dark chocolate/cocoa, burnt malts, perhaps some licorice and black coffee....creamy coffee to be exact, raw coconut flesh, and perhaps some Earthy soil on the finish...somewhat clean at the same time.

T- The flavors follow the aromas rather well, with smooth chocolate malts, creamy coffee, coconut cream/milk, sweet yet burnt caramel, mild Earth, root like throughout, heavy cocoa that keeps things bitter, oaked vanilla, fresh chocolate covered coffee beans and a certain nuttiness. I love the fact that there is a yeasty smoothness throughout the entire tasting process!

M/O- This is super smooth and velvety rich....I find the carbonation is creamy as well and really allows the overall flavor to sink into the palate. I think the balance between sweet and dry is very well done and this is a very highly drinkable porter that I could enjoy throughout a session, and is a very nice one to enjoy with company. Excellent with a toasted coconut marshmallow or on its own as a dessert porter...aids in digestion as well! Highly recommended!

Ruby brown with tan film. 3.5
Sweet coconut nose with chocolate malts. 3.75
Cocoa, slight woodiness, some molasses, low-level earthy hops, and a big coconut end. 3.75
Round, short of medium, watery. 3.5

Undercarbed, smooth but thin, and generally not a good porter underneath. But, boy, is the coconut there. An underwhelming beer from a barely-average brewery. 3.5

On tap at the local genuine irish pub. Little head, just a collar. Big fudge nose, a little coconut and toasty dark malts. Taste is similar, light fudge, a little coconut, light roast in the finish. A bit thin, light carb. Not bad at all.

16oz glass at the so-called Deep Cove 'tap takeover' at the Underground in Edmonton - looks like this is the only new offering from this brewery, as all the other beers here are from their recently rebranded efforts.

This beer appears a clear, very dark brownish black colour, with a thin cap of wispy and frothy beige head, which leaves very little in the way of lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of sharp, bittersweet chocolate, black licorice, muddled coconut flesh, cafe-au-lait, and some mild earthy hop bitterness. The taste is big sweet cocoa powder, earthy coconut milk, a mixed bag of zesty dark orchard fruitiness, muddled and roasted caramel/toffee malt, more zippy anise notes, and an unexpected sense of hovering metallic alcohol.

The carbonation is fairly understated in its plain and unassuming frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and generally smooth, with a wee airy creaminess arising right out of the gate. It finishes sweet, the chocolate and coconut fruit drink essences carrying on and on (and on).

Overall, a pleasantly rendered flavoured porter, the guest ingredients doing well to maintain control over the whole of the proceedings. Perhaps a few more supportive bubbles would be nice, but that's not really a big deal in the end. Very dessert-worthy, if I even had room, eh?
