A 330ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2013, so it's just out of date. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Focusing on hop 'terroir', this pale ale is hopped with varieties unique to New Zealand.
Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A hazy orange-amber hue with fine sediment and very low carbonation. Yields a small, frothy head of white foam that quickly settles as a surface layer. Aroma of floral hops with hints of white grape, grass and mild citrus. This is underpinned by grainy caramel malt and earthy yeast. Vaguely 'homebrewy'.
Tastes of caramel malt and floral hops with a dry finish. Notes of grain, caramel, mild toasted malt, white grape, subtle grapefruit, citrus, faint tropical fruit, grass and earthy yeast. Well-attenuated, followed by a delicate, spicy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly with good body, but flat and textureless. Needs more carbonation. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of floral hops, earthy yeast and mild caramel.
A decent brew, if not pitch perfect. Looks a bit lacklustre due to the lack of carbonation and head. The aroma and flavour are OK, with pleasant flowery hop notes but perhaps a shade too much yeast. The body needs more carbonation. A flawed effort - though whether this is due to the brewer or just an unsealed cap is debateable. I'd still say it's worth a punt if you come across it.
