A 660ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2014. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. This is a collaborative brew between the Bad Seed and Northern Monk breweries - the first of the 'Northern Alliance series'. Brewed with malted wheat, Citra hops, lemongrass and salted lemon peel.
Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A bright, hazy golden-amber hue with fine sediment and good carbonation. Yields a large head of white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of lemon, herbs, mild citrus, yeast esters, subtle spice, earthiness, faint wheat and a hint of bubblegum. Flashes of tradition under a modern facade.
Tastes of lemony herbs and yeast esters, with a prolonged dry finish. Notes of lemongrass, herbs, mild citrus, fruity yeast esters, clove, faint spice, wheat, a touch of bubblegum and stewed leaves. Perhaps a whisper of salt but it isn't pronounced. The booze is well hidden. Highly attenuated, with a mild, herbal bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and decent body. Slightly astringent, followed by an aftertaste of stewed leaves/herbs, yeast esters and mild lemon.
An intriguing effort, though falls short of greatness. Looks alright but very clouded once the yeast is fully suspended. The aroma and flavour are an odd blend of lemongrass, lemony hops, yeast esters and herbal notes, with just a twinge of salt. Body is OK. I find the herbal character muddles the flavour - it would be a lot cleaner without the contribution from the lemongrass. A creative take on the style but not entirely satisfying. That said, worth trying for novelty's sake should you stumble across it.
