330ml bottle poured into a tulip glass
Look: Dark amber with a slight haziness due to sediment in the bottle. Slightly off-white head which lingers for a short amount of time before receding to a foam cap and some ringing round the edge of the glass. No lacing to speak of.
Smell: Cascade by name, Cascade by nature - all the characteristics are there: plenty of floral and spice notes with more than a whiff of grapefruit. The more 'usual' smells of pine resin and grass are noticeably absent but this doesn't distract from a very fresh, 'clean' smell.
Taste: Quite malty to begin with, to the point that you wonder where all the hops have gone. However, shortly afterwards you'll get that lovely, grapefruit-y Cascade flavour which lingers all the way through the aftertaste and a little bit beyond. Lacks the hoppy 'punch' of similar pale ales but is plenty good enough on its own merits.
Feel: Full and slightly oily with a modest amount of carbonation, all of which helps to prop up the overall hop flavours and bitterness.
Overall: Probably not quite the hop bomb that Bad Seed would like it to be but even so it's a very good take on the American Pale Ale style and up there with the rest of their offerings. I'm not sure whether this is a one-off brew or will be a regular feature in their lineup - either way, it's worthy of the attention of any hop-head.
