Aug. 2007: Cask conditioned at The Guildford Arms, Edinburgh. Deep amber to copper coloured beer, creamy head. Nice hoppy and fruity aroma, nearly vinous. Moderately fruity and malty flavour, moderate bitterness, dusty hops in the finish.

Presentation: An afternoon in Sowerby Bridge was soon supplanted with a few beers in Halifax. After a decent Pint in the Three Pigeons it was time for a “swifty” at the Pump Rooms before catching the train back to Wakefield. Many Guest beers were on sale in the Pump Room but I plopped for the Harviestoun Navigator, a 4.37% Seasonal.

Appearance: Pale straw with an off-white head that was patchy once it settled. Crystal clean presentation but the broken covering sadly depleted the impression.

Nose: Tart flowery hops meld in with a contribution from sweet toasted malts and some biscuit in the back end. Predominantly flowery though.

Taste: Dry hops with a soft perfumed quality. Flowery entrance soon balances with clean toasted malts and a light sweetness. It all balances and comes together very nicely. A little hop-spice and fruitiness in the dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Finely dissolved conditioning cascades over the tongue, lively and nicely aerated it has a pleasurable texture that satisfies.

Drinkability: Easy going for a 4.3% brew from the Cask. The light body adds to the sessionable quality of this one.

Overall: Has a very refreshing lager-like quality to it, and a touch of the ‘Ptarmigan’ to it. Enjoyable stuff!
