5 oz sample served at Max's Taphouse in Baltimore. From notes. This was a very special joint review with Shroud0fdoom.

A: Pours a very dark brown color. There isn't really much of a head (as expected), just a thin tan film. A tiny amount of lacing is left on the glass.

S: Woah, where did this come from? It's actually quite tart on the nose - almost to the point of being a dark sour. There are also notes of roast, chocolate, and apple brandy. They play a lesser role to the lacto, however. There's a worrying disconnect between the sourness and the base that makes us think it's infected.

T: At first, a healthy lactic tartness washes over the palate...make that drowns the palate. The finish is pretty much typical Old Engine Oil, with a combination of chocolate, roast, and mild hopping. I get traces of the brandy barrel in spurts. It could have been good, but the two of us believe that there is literally NO harmony or balance between the base beer and the souring component.

M: It's dry and well carbonated; while I'm not enthused about the flavor profile, it goes down the palate without much friction. Slightly tannic feeling, as well.

O: I don't know, this just doesn't come together. At first, I thought it was infected, but reading some of the reviews of the other versions had lead me to believe it's intentionally sour. I love Old Engine Oil, and figured a soured version would be freaking fantastic. It wasn't, at all. Shroud0fdoom couldn't even finish his little sample! I'll give this one more chance, because normally I enjoy a good soured porter/stout (Harvey's Imperial Stout comes to mind).
