A 330ml bottle with a BB of July 2017. Purchased recently from Home Bargains. Described on the label as a traditional Scottish ale with notes of fruit loaf, treacle, dates and butterscotch.
A: Poured into a tulip. A deep toffee-amber colour with good clarity and moderate carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a persistent surface layer. Slight lacing.
S: Aroma of sweet malt with hints of caramel, light brown sugar, barley sugar, toffee, grain, subtle dried fruit, ale yeast and faint leafy hops. A classic, balanced character - very nice.
T: Tastes of caramel malt with notes of toffee, barley sugar, subtle brown sugar, husky grain, ale yeast, mild dried fruit and leafy hops. Quite sweet, followed by a subdued bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with soft carbonation and good body. Would benefit from enhanced texture. Aftertaste of grainy caramel malt, leafy hops and ale yeast.
O: Tasty - a traditional take on the style. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour are sweet and malt-driven. Hints of yeast and hops add depth. Nice body; could be a tad more carbonated. Goes down a treat - well worth sampling.
