On-tap at Prime 16 into a ¾ pint glass. This is the Schiehallion lager aged 18 months in Ransom bourbon barrels.
A: Hazy straw body under a fine cap of white head. Ok retention, not much lace. Pretty unremarkable.
S: Whiskey, raw oak, and lots of grassiness. Some cereal grains. It’s pleasant and balanced, but nowhere near as intense as I was expecting given the advertised barrel time. Definitely an impressive aroma for the style, though.
T: Some almost tart fruitiness starts things off, followed by whiskey-soaked grass and closed out with dry, tannic oakiness. Woody bitterness on the aftertaste. The beer definitely hasn’t stood up to the barrel, but sadly the bourbon doesn’t play as a big a role as the raw wood. A bit harsh overall, but still enjoyable.
M: Lively, frothy medium body. A bit too explosive, but not bad.
O: This wasn’t the disaster a barrel-aged lager could have been, but it wasn’t a thrilling success either. Worth trying, but probably not worth replicating.
Cheers!
