Got this one at Drie Meter
From a bottle into a snifter
Aged on Achtentoshan whisky barrels
APPEARANCE: Pours out clear black and yields a two finger, medium-thick looking, creamy dark tan head with great retention. Head slowly fades to a full cap and clings to the glass. Black body with no real carbonation evident. Thick ring remains leaving some decent lacing down the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Some definite smoky peat up front. Earthy, with dark chocolate, leather, ash and light coffee notes as well. Enough going on.
TASTE: Leather and tobacco with some smoky peat flavors up front. A bit boozy with some wood at the swallow, opening up a bold and lingering finish of earthy peat, oak, leather and ashy tobacco flavors, some dark chocolate and alcohol.
PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth with a bit of a burn and finishes somewhat sticky. Some decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is surprisingly good. Though I’m not a huge peat fan, this one is aromatic, flavorful, well balanced and generally well put together. The feel is also top notch too. I can’t say I’ve been overly impressed with Van Der Streek so far, but this one definitely puts them on the map in the barrel aging community here. Worth checking out if you’re a fan of the style. Recommended.
